LSU Wins Wild Shoot Out Over Texas 45-38

The hype surrounding this game was all about who was the real DBU. That narrative didn't quite play out on the field as these teams combined to have 880 passing yards with both quarterbacks accounting for more than 400 yards.

Ultimately, LSU quarterback Joe Burrow and LSU came out on top of this passer's duel 45-38.

Temperatures on the field may have been around a hundred degrees, but it took a while for LSU to get warmed up. After trailing Texas early, LSU pulled it out in the end 45-38.

"I think it's a big statement, but obviously we want to play better," LSU coach Ed Orgeron said.

LSU quarterback Joe Burrow got off to a rocky completing three of his first six passes for 46 yards and an interception. LSU's offensive line was struggling to hold blocks, and LSU trailed 7-3 in the first quarter.

But, after that interception, it was no looking back for the LSU offense.

Following the interception Burrow was nearly flawless. He responded by completing 28 his final 33 passes for 425 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.

"The kid's a baller," Orgeron said of Burrow. "He lives for that moment. This is a tough kind of place, and he got it done."

Notably, LSU had three receivers finish with 100 yards or more for the first time in school history. Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire led the Tigers in rushing with 15 carries for 87 yards with a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

“Yeah that’s obviously big for us, but I want to give a big shout out to the offensive line,” Burrow said of having three receivers with 100-yard games. “Texas blitzed us while playing cover 1 in the second half and our o-line stepped up to the challenge.”

This performance earned Burrow a lofty position in the LSU record books. He now holds the second-most yards in LSU single-game passing history.

After putting up 17 points in the second quarter, it appeared LSU was going to cruise to a comfortable victory with a 20-7 lead.

However, in the second half, Texas Quarterback Sam Ehlinger and the Texas offense had other plans. The Longhorns rallied for what would become an epic shoot out that featured more than 1,100 total yards.

Ehlinger accounted for five second-half touchdowns including four through the air. He finished passing 31-47 with 401 yards and four touchdowns.

The teams went back and forth exchanging touchdowns in the fourth quarter. It was seemingly when Burrow scrambled out on 3rd and 17 and connected with Justin Jefferson who tiptoed the sidelines for a 61-yard score. Only 2:27 remained and LSU held a 14-point lead.

Then with the aid of an LSU pass interference, Ehlinger tossed his final score of the night with just 22 seconds remaining.

LSU Defensive backs were tested early and often in the second half. There were a number of plays were the LSU defensive backs got chippy in their coverage. LSU had 6 penalties for 65 yards in the game.

Texas was an onside kick away from having a chance to tie the game. Texas nearly recovered, but the ball rolled out of bounds sealing the Longhorns' fate.

That's 1-0 against the man many LSU fans wanted to see replace Les Miles as head coach for the sultry Cajun from South Louisiana.
