LSU defeated seventh-ranked Florida 42-28 Saturday night at Tiger Stadium in a game that featured 968 yards of offense.

LSU quarterback Joe Burrow played nearly a flawless game, albeit limited to less than 22 minutes on the field. Burrow threw as many touchdowns as he did incompletions going 21-24 for 293 yards and three touchdowns. He added another 43 yards on the ground on six carries.

Heisman talk surrounding Burrow will only heat up after his second win of the season over a top-10 team. On the season Burrow has completed 79.5% of his passes for 2,157 yards, 25 touchdowns, and only three interceptions. Burrow will have his eyes on LSU’s season record for touchdown passes next week. He needs three scores to tie the record.

While Burrow is the hero of this game, LSU’s defense was the story of the game. After yielding three consecutive long drives of 75 yards and a touchdown, LSU trailed 28-21 after the first drive of the third quarter.

At that point, something clicked with LSU’s defense. LSU did not allow another point and came up with two stops in the red zone of Florida’s final two drives.

“What a great job of our only allowing 7 points in the second half,” LSU coach Ed Orgeron said. “Tremendous adjustments by (defensive coordinator Dave) Arranda and his staff.”

Meanwhile, LSU’s offense continued to roll. Burrow’s final pass of the game went 54 yards for a touchdown to receiver Ja’Mar Chase. This put the Tigers up 42-28 with 5:43 left to play.

Florida marched down the field for one last-ditch effort to put some points on the board and try to force an onside kick attempt.

After a night full of defensive struggles, LSU’s defense answered the bell to ice this game. LSU linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson dropped Florida quarterback Kyle Trask for a two-yard loss on 4th and goal from LSU’s two-yard line.

While it was on the field, LSU’s offense was simply dominant. However, Florida’s long, time-consuming drives kept LSU’s lethal offense sidelined for most of the evening.

Florida converted on nine of its 17 3rd down tries, held the ball for more than 38 minutes and had 84 offensive snaps compared to LSU’s 48.

Florida may have held the ball for a lot longer, but LSU did more with the ball the Tigers had it. despites having 36 fewer plays LSU outgained Florida 511-457. LSU averaged 10.6 yards per play while Florida averaged 5.4 yards per play.

“The biggest stat of the night was no sacks,” Orgeron said. “Credit to (LSU Offensive Line Coach) James Cregg and the offensive line. They worked very hard.”

Burrow agreed with Orgeron’s sentiment.

“That was about as flawless as I’ve ever seen an offensive line play,” Burrow said.

Offensive balance has been a hot topic item for this LSU team. Against Florida, LSU ran the ball 24 times and passed the ball 24 times.

And, it was one of LSU’s best nights running the ball. The Tigers averaged 9.1 yards a carry on 24 attempts for 218 yards. LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire led the way with one of his best games as a Tiger with 13 carries for 134 yards and two touchdowns.

LSU defenders Patrick Queen, Grant Delpit, and K’Lavon Chaisson led the way on LSU’s defense with eight tackles each. After having one of the tougher games of his young career, Derek Stingley Jr. came away with the sole turnover of this game on a diving interception in the end zone.
