LSU fends off late surge to beat Ole Miss 58-37

LSU fought a furious second half surge led by Ole Miss (4-7, 2-5) quarterback John Rhys Plumlee.

Plumlee shreded the Tigers for 212 yards and four touchdowns on  21 carries.

Ultimately it was once again Joe Burrow and the lethal LSU (10-0, 6-0) offense that saved the day giving LSU the win 58-37, and providing LSU coach Ed Orgeron vindication over his former employer.

"Our object was to win the game, and we won it by 21 points,” Orgeron said. "But obviously when you don’t play well on defense at LSU, nobody’s feeling good. That’s just the way it is.”

Joe Burrow opened up the game on fire. By halftime, he had more than 300 yards passing, and broken two school passing records.

Burrow threw for 489 yards breaking Rohan Davey’s 18-year record for single-season passing yards with 3,687 yards on the season. He also broke the school record for consecutive completions with 17.

“(Burrow) is a really good player,” Ole Miss head coach Matt Luke said. “In the first half, he was able to extend plays with his feet and hit big balls down the field. I think that was the difference.”

LSU sprinted out to a 28-0 lead. And, that’s when Plumlee decided to go on some long sprints of his own.

Plumlee broke off touchdown runs of five, 46, 60 and 35 yards. On the night LSU yielded more than 600 yards.

Not to be outdone, the potent LSU offense reponded with 714 yards of offense. Burrow once again was absolutely prolific going 32-42 with 489 yards and 5 touchdowns.

“We had over 700 yards of offense,” Burrow said. “So, it wasn’t a terrible day.”

However, he did throw a pair of second-half interceptions, which gave Ole Miss second life. However behind a strong rushing attack LSU eventually pulled away.

The hero of LSU’s big win in Tuscaloosa last week responded with another strong outing. Clyde Edwards-Helaire led the Tigers in rushing with 172 yards on 23 attempts with a touchdown.

LSU receiver Ja’Marr Chase also had a record-breaking night. He added three touchdowns and 227 yards breaking the LSU record for single-season touchdown receptions. His partner in crime, Justin Jefferson recorded nine grabs for 112 yards and a pair of touchdowns of his own

Defenslively, LSU had a tough outing, but there were some bright spots. Linebacker Jacob Philips notched 11 tackles. Safety Jacoby Stevens and Linebacker Patrick Queen followed him up with nine tackles each. Defensive back Kary Vincent Jr. added a interception.

However in addition to Plumlee’s big night, Ole Miss running back Jerrion Ealy ran for 141 yards on the Tigers and receiver Elijah Moore had nine catches for 143 yards.

“I don’t think so… But I don’t think I’ve never give up 600 yards either,” Orgeron said when asked about his offense putting up 700 yards.
