BATON ROUGE – The LSU men's basketball team made their last 10 field goal attempts of the first half and used two double digit scoring runs to get control of the game and score a 77-50 win over UMBC Tuesday night at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

The Tigers, 3-1, fell behind by eight points three times in the first eight minutes of the game before the offense got cranked up. But when the offense began to roll, the buckets began to come with ease.

In the process, LSU outscored the Retrievers, 34-10, the remainder of the half. LSU first tied the game at 17-17, went on a 12-4 run and broke it open on an 18-to-2 run that put the Tigers up 16, 35-19, with 1:32 to go in the half.

Only one Tiger, freshman Trendon Watford, played more than 23 minutes and nine-of-the-10 Tigers that played scored.

Charles Manning Jr. played 22 minutes and made six field goals, including a three, finishing with a team high 16 points. Watford had his first college double double with 12 points and 12 rebounds while Darius Day made it back-to-back double doubles with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Emmitt Williams, Skylar Mays and James Bishop all had nine points.

Dimitrije Spasojevic led UMBC with 14 points and a team high six boards, while L. J. Owens had 10 points.

The Tigers just missed shooting 50 percent from the floor for a second straight game, hitting 29-of-59 for 49.2 percent. LSU made five treys and went 14-of-22 at the line. UMBC was held to just 31.1 percent from the field (19-of-61) with five treys. The Retrievers were 7-of-16 at the free throw line.

LSU almost hit the 50 mark in rebounds with a 49-31 advantage. LSU had a 44-20 advantage in points in the paint, leading for the last 27 minutes of the contest and opening as much as a 31-point lead with 2:55 to play.

The Tigers now will travel Wednesday evening to Jamaica where they will take part in the Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic. The Tigers will face No. 15 Utah State at 6 p.m. CT on Friday and Rhode Island on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The games will be televised on the CBS Sports Network and broadcast on the affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network.

LSU Head Coach Will Wade

Opening statement…
"First off I want to thank the students that came. I thought the band was awesome, they had a great spirit to them. I thought they were in the game, especially when it got to a large margin. They stayed in the game, so I want to thank all those guys, Dr. Jones and the band and those guys. I thought they did a phenomenal job bringing an atmosphere tonight. Overall, we made progress. We are not where we need to be, but we are not where we were either, so we made some progress. We handled the ball a little bit better. I thought we did a good job on the backboards. I thought our defense was solid. We gave up a few too many uncontested threes, we have to do a better job there. Overall, I was pleased. I thought (Charles) Manning Jr. gave us really good energy coming in off the bench when we were down 9-1. I thought (James) Bishop looked comfortable. This is the first time he has really looked comfortable out there playing. He played under control with four assists and two turnovers. That play where he pitched it to Manning in the corner for an open three was a huge play. A week ago, he would have just plowed over the guy and it would have been a charge, and today it was three points. I think that was improvement and that was progress. Overall, I thought we got better and we have to get a lot better before Friday. We are playing a really good team on Friday."

On limiting turnovers and finding a rhythm in the game…
"It was good. We had three turnovers at the first media break. We had six turnovers in the first half and one of them was when we had two guys fighting for a rebound, which I can live with that turnover. The other one was the offensive foul on (Trendon) Watford where the guy came to his back. In the second half, we had some inexperienced guys in there and we didn't do some things we needed to do. Like I said, I thought we made progress."

On Charles Manning Jr.'s performance…
"I thought he did a really good job tonight playing within himself. I don't know if he will admit this, but I think coming off the bench has helped him. I think he is such a smart player, he is such a cerebral player, he is able to see things when he is out there. It is almost like because he can see things and he knows what is going on once he gets in there, he can just pounce. He knows exactly what the weaknesses are, he knows exactly where to drive and he knows exactly what needs to happen defensively. He can just go. I think that has been very helpful."

On fixing the turnover issues…
"Obviously in the last two games we turned it over at a high rate, so tonight was progress. We cut it from 25 to 15 but some of them were just unfortunate plays like charges and things like that.  We have to keep cleaning that up and move forward and we will feel pretty good. In practice yesterday, we had to run for every turnover which made it a long practice, but it definitely helped us for today's game.

LSU Guard Charles Manning Jr.

On capitalizing off of turnovers…
"That's a key part of our team. We are very athletic and fast so once we get stops on defense and deflections on passes, we will be able to open up everything else."

On scoring a career high in points off of the bench…
"I didn't even know until he just told me.  Just staying aggressive, staying in attack mode, trying to get to rim, and finding my spots is the key. Coach was telling me to stay in attack mode at all times and that's kind of what I did.  Getting to my spots and making those shots allowed me to help my team. Adjusting to the new role off of the bench isn't really a big deal to me as long as I'm helping my team win. If that means me coming off of the bench and providing a spark, then that's what I have to do.  When I got into the game, things started to feel sped up and started to get intense because I was attacking."

LSU Forward Darius Days

On his second career double double…
"It felt great and I wouldn't have it if it wasn't for my teammates. I hit a back-door cut, Javonte (Smart) saw me, and hit me with a back-door pass where I made the layup and got the and-one.  On the other side, Charles (Manning Jr.) hit me with a pass and I got another layup with the and-one.  I wouldn't have gotten that double double if it wasn't for them."

On responding after slow start…
"We just had to huddle up and talk about it.  We went over it in practice and said that we have to pass the ball more instead of taking ill-advised shots.  Tonight showed, we passed the ball more and had less turnovers.  We also scored a lot of points tonight which is usually every night, but everyone got going tonight.  We were able to move the ball and find the open man; it was simple, but we make it more difficult with the turnovers like the last few games."

UMBC Head Coach Ryan Odom

Opening statement…
"I thought LSU did really well. I thought we got off to a good start obviously for about the first half of the first half. Offensively we were able to get a couple buckets near the rim. I think we were 7-for-12 from two. Obviously 2-for-16 in the first half is not gonna get it done. I felt like we had some open shots out there that could go down. It was certainty a really poor shooting performance by us, but gotta give LSU credit. They have some long guys. Some really athletic guys that can really bother you. I like their team. I think they're gonna be a good team this year. And it's early in the season so they're trying to figure themselves out. We're doing the same. We've had some guys in and out you know with injuries. Some are just coming back. K.J. (Jackson) is just coming back. Clearly, he wasn't necessarily himself. He was a little rusty, but there's always a first game when you come back and that's usually how it goes. I think LSU's size near the rim, their size at guard bothered us. They're very tough to deal with in the open court and I thought they did a good job executing Coach's (Will Wade) game plan today and getting the ball where it needed to go. They clearly wanted to attack inside and I thought they did a nice job."

On how Darnell Rogers performed tonight…
"Darnell's a special player. He's unique. He's probably the smallest in college basketball from a size perspective I would say. I don't know that there's anyone else smaller than him, but he's had that his entire life. He never used that as an excuse to not be a great player. I thought he did a nice job of getting inside their defense, kicking it out which was part of our game plan to get in there as much as we could, but not throw up shots because those guys are really talented at timing and affecting shots inside the paint. And so, we encourage our guys to shot fake. I thought they did a nice job of that with the exception of four or five attempts in the lane. I thought majority of the time the guys did what we asked them to do. We're not a good defensive team right now. Clearly, that's what we hung our hat on last season."
