LSU obliterates Texas A&M 50-7

LSU came into the game with no lack of motivation.

Maybe it was the loss after seven overtimes in College Station last season. Perhaps, it was the College Football Playoff Committee dropping LSU to #2. It could have been Joe Burrow being just 261 yards and three touchdowns shy of tying both respecting SEC single-season records.

Whatever it was, it worked.

The Tigers (12-0, 8-0) crushed SEC rival Texas A&M 50-7 securing the second 12-0 regular season in LSU history.

On the way, Joe Burrow cemented himself in SEC lore by breaking the SEC single-season record for passing yards and tying the SEC single-season record for passing touchdowns. For the season he has completed 78.3 percent of his passes for 4,366 yards and 44 touchdowns. If sustained, all three would stand as SEC records.

“We Played for 60 minutes to the LSU standard of performance,” LSU coach Ed Orgeron said.

From the opening kickoff, LSU seemed to be in control of this one. After the first quarter, LSU lead 21-0 outgaining the Aggies 240-18.

In fact, LSU scored touchdowns on each of its opening four drives while Texas A&M (7-5, 4-4) had only mustered three first downs.

LSU continued to cruise for the rest of the game outgaining the Aggies 553-169.

Burrow completed 23 of his 32 pass attempts for 352 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.

“This has surpassed all of my expectations,” Burrow said. “We have so many guys that have fought through adversity. I think that has really helped us become who we are.

While it was business as usual for the lethal LSU offense, defensively the Tigers strung together what might be the most impressive outing of the season.

The Tigers limited Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond to 10-30 passing with 92 yards and three interceptions. LSU sacked Mond six times.

Linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson was LSU’s leading tackler with six tackles including 1.5 sacks. Defensive backs Kary Vincent Jr., Derek Stingley Jr., and Grant Delpit each accounted for an interception.

“Give LSU credit,” Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher said. “They have a heck of a team and they kicked out butts in all three phases. They capitalized on our penalties and mistakes.”

“Tremendous job by our staff, but you know what, we ain’t done yet,” Orgeron said. “We’re happy beat Texas A&M, we’re happy we’re 12-0. We’re going to enjoy this for 24 hours and then on to Georgia where we’re going to play in a big SEC title game, which means a lot to our university, means a lot to our football team.”
