LSU claims SEC title beating No. 4 UGA 37-10
LSU (13-0, 9-0) has secured its first playoff bid and claimed its first SEC Championship since 2011 after defeating #4 Georgia 37-10.
It was a convincing performance, which the Tigers will hope is compelling enough to earn the #1 seed in the upcoming college football playoff.
And, for LSU’s star quarterback, Joe Burrow, it will likely have been enough to secure LSU’s first Heisman Trophy since 1959.
After the game, the Ohio native had a humble response when asked about winning the prestigious award.
“That’s for other people to decide, Burrow said. “We put the film out there and we’re 13-0. That’s all I have to say.”
His performance was once again cinematic going 28-38 with 349 yards and four touchdowns with no turnovers. 71 of those yards came on a wild scramble and toss to receiver Justin Jefferson, which many are calling his “Heisman moment.”
Jefferson was the game’s leading receiver with seven grabs for 115 yards.
“It was all improvised,” Burrow said. “He ran a six-yard hitch route and just ran off as I was scrambling.”
He also had 41 yards rushing and a reception for 16 yards and a first down, which he threw to himself.
LSU essentially dominated Georgia (11-2, 7-2) from the very first snap. It was a complete performance, where LSU outgained the Bulldogs 481-286.
Georgia limited LSU’s rushing attack with stingy front seven. LSU’s leading rusher, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire was limited to 57 yards on 15 carries.
While a prolific offense has become a weekly headline for the Tigers, the defense has elevated its game over the past two weeks.
“The way we played on defense I thought was the best of the season, but I wasn’t surprised,” LSU coach Ed Orgeron said. “But, this wasn’t our final destination.”
LSU defensive back Derek Stingley Jr. was the star of the defense with five tackles and a pair of interceptions. He was well aware of the national commentary surround his unit.
“This game proved a point because a lot of people didn't respect us,” said. “But, we came out and showed what we were made of.”
The Tigers limited Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm to completing less than half of his passes (20-42) for 225 yards and a touchdown.
