LSU blown out 40-13 by Tennessee in Tiger Stadium

Brian Kelly’s first top-25 matchup at LSU (4-2, 2-1) did not go as planned. Tennessee (5-0, 2-0) came into Tiger Stadium and blasted the Tigers 37-13.

“I've got to coach this team better,” Kelly said. “That's the bottom line."

Things went wrong from the opening kickoff for LSU in this game. Jack Bech muffed said kick return, giving the ball to Tennesee at the 27. Five plays later, the Volunteers punched it in to take a 7-0 lead.

Tennessee never looked back on its way to taking a 20-0 with 14:39 left in the second quarter.

During that stretch, LSU failed to convert on fourth down twice, forfeiting an easy field goal and giving the ball to Tennesee on the 45, setting up a 45-yard touchdown pass from Hendon Hooker to Jalin Hyatt.

Hooker went 17-27 for 239 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

LSU simply could not make the plays when it mattered in this game. LSU and Tennesee both had three fourth-down attempts. Tennessee converted all three and LSU failed on all three. Tennesee fumbled the ball three times and recovered all three times. LSU lost its one fumble.

LSU did show a sign of life when LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels led LSU on a 12-play 96-yard touchdown drive capped off by a one-yard score from LSU running back Josh Williams. This cut the deficit to 20-7.

Daniels completed 30 of 45 passes for 300 yards a touchdown and an interception. He was also LSU’s leading rusher with 38 yards on 16 attempts.

However, shut down any comeback hopes by scoring 20 straight points.

The Volunteers outgained LSU 502-355.

Defensively, LSU linebacker Micah Baskerville led the way with 15 tackles.
