
LSU’s National L Club Spring Game featured an offense versus defense scoring. Despite many players looking sharp on both sides, the game ended in a tie at 32.
“I would have gone for two,” Kelly joked in his post-game press conference.
All eyes were on the quarterbacks Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier after both played significant snaps in LSU’s Citrus Bowl victory.
Both played very well, but Jayden Daniels took the majority of the first-team reps and put up the best numbers. and it didn’t take long for him to take command.
His first pass of the game was was high, but that didn’t stop wide receiver Kyren Lacy from reeling it in one-handed and dragging defenders to the endzone on a 70-yard touchdown.
Daniels finished the game completing 10 of 11 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns with no turnovers.
His coach had some high praise for him after the game.
“He’s committed to being the best quarterback in the country,” Kelly said.
Lacy was the leading receiver for the game with four catches for 92 yards and the aforementioned touchdown. He was closely followed by receiver Brian Thomas with three grabs for 66 yards and a score.
Nussmeier took most of his reps with the second-team offense but looked sharp with his reps with the first unit. On his first drive with the starters, he completed all four of his passes, including a 51-yard bomb and a 7-yard touchdown to Thomas.
He finished the day passing 5-8 for 139 yards, two touchdowns and no turnovers.
Defensively LSU linebacker Whit Weeks made the biggest play of the game intercepting freshman quarterback Rickie Collins for a 40-yard touchdown.
Collins put took some lumps in his first action as a Tiger completing three of seven passes for 25 yards and an interception. He added 19 yards on five carries as well.
Defensive linemen Fitzgerald West and Quency Wiggins led the team in tackles with five each.
