LSU pulls away from Nicholls 44-21

It wasn’t as pretty as the final score indicated, but LSU did pull away late beating Nicholls 44-21.

LSU struggled to run the ball while Nichols made it a focal point. Subsequently, LSU found itself with a 23-21 lead in the third quarter despite having put itself in scoring position on four out of five drives.

That was due in large part to to Nicholls pulling out a bag of tricks such as a double pass for a touchdown. But it was due in larger part to a gritty performance from Nicholls running back Collin Guggenheim running the ball 25 times for 145 yards and a pair of scores.

Nicholls outrushed LSU 150-64.

“Certainly I’m looking at the areas that we have to do better,” Kelly said of his team coming off a short week. “That was a team that was tired and didn’t play its very best.”

LSU responded with three consecutive passing touchdowns while shutting out Nichols effectively putting the game out of reach.

“Be careful about the narratives about what this team is,” Kelly said. “ I know what this team can be. I watched them play against USC.”

LSU’s leading rushers were Josh Williams and Kaleb Jackson who each rushed for 19 yards.

Offensively, LSU was carried by Garrett Nussmeier and the passing attack. This was Nussmeier's third consecutive 300-yard passing game.

Nussmeier completed 27 of 37 pass attempts for 302 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions.

Those six passing touchdowns put Nussmeier in elite company as he joined Heisman winners Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels as the only LSU player to throw six touchdowns in a game.

His favorite target was Kyren Lacy who hauled in 65 yards on five grabs with three touchdowns.

LSU outgained Nichols 378-295. However, Nichols won the time of possession battle 31:09 to 28:51.

Defensively LSU looked suspect at times allowing a 67-yard touchdown from Guggenheim, but the unit tightened up in the third quarter after the opening drive.

Linebacker Greg Penn was the leading tackler with nine tackles.
