LSU (2-1, 1-0) opened this game about as lifeless as possible getting dominated in all three phases of the game. But somehow, LSU miraculously found a win to come away with the win at South Carolina 36-33.

After a blocked punt LSU found itself trailing 17-0. South Carolina (2-1, 1-1) outgained LSU 135-7 in the first quarter.

To say things look bleak for the Tigers at that point would be an understatement.

LSU responded with a 29-7 run to capture the lead for the first time at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

“The fact of the matter is they got down and they just kept playing,” Kelly said. “That’s college football.”

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was instrumental in leading this comeback effort. He was far from perfect but managed to complete 24 of 40 passes for 285 yards and a pair of touchdowns with one interception.

“This is a great early-season road test against a great team,” Nussmeier said. “It got tough, but we got it done.”

Nussmeier’s leading receiver was Aaron Anderson with five catches for 96 yards.

With South Carolina starting quarterback Lanoris Sellers sidelined with an ankle injury, South Carolina was unable to muster any sort of passing offense in the second half. Intuition might tell you, after LSU surged back to capture the lead it would never look back given South Carolina was unable to pass the ball with any consistency.

Enter South Carolina running back Rocket Sanders with a 66-yard touchdown to recapture the lead 30-29. Sanders gashed LSU all game running for 143 yards on 19 carries with two touchdowns.

After exchanging three fourth-quarter touchdowns LSU found itself with the ball down 33-29 with 2:34 remaining. LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier found receiver Kyren Lacy for a 29-yard sideline strike setting up the eventual two-yard touchdown from running back Josh WIlliams with 1:12 to play. This gave LSU a three-point lead.

Despite hitting the game-winning run, it was freshman running back Caden Durham who led the way rushing for LSU with 98 yards and two touchdowns from his 11 carries.

If you thought the dramatics were over after that, you probably haven’t been paying attention.

South Carolina backup quarterback Robby Ashford made his second completion of the day connecting with Jacobs Vandrevius for 31 yards on third down. This set up the potential game-tying field goal from 49 yards out.

In fitting fashion, South Carolina kicker Alex Herrera missed the kick giving LSU the win 36-33. In the final three quarters, LSU outgained South Carolina 410-263, outgaining the Gamecocks 417-398 for the game.
