LSU throttles of Arkansas 34-10

No let down game for these Tigers - LSU (6-1, 3-0) comfortably put away Arkansas (4-3, 2-2) Saturday evening in Fayetteville 34-10 keeping itself right in the middle of the playoff picture and setting up a huge top-15 showdown with Texas A&M in College Station next week.

“Certainly a lot of things are coming together for our football team,” LSU coach Brian Kelly said.

After an emotional overtime upset win against Ole Miss last week, and with the Razorbacks coming off a bye week, many pundits were speculating that this could be a potential “trap game” for LSU.

LSU's star linebacker Whit Weeks put that talk to rest in the third quarter with a devastating interception giving LSU the ball on the Arkansas two-yard line up 16-10.

“They're beginning to execute at a much higher level consistently, and it starts with controlling the line of scrimmage,” Kelly said. “(Arkansas) could not run the ball. They became one-dimensional, and when that happens, we can get after the quarterback. We made life difficult for him.”

Weeks not only made this momentum-swinging play, but also was LSU’s leading tackler with nine tackles, a sack, an interception and a pass breakup.

One play later LSU running back Caden Durham punched it in for the two-yard rush and LSU never looked back cruising to a 24-point victory. This was one of Durham’s three touchdowns on the night running the ball 21 times for 101 yards.

“We made it essential that we run the ball,” Durham said. “In practice we run the ball a lot, and in the game we run the ball a lot, so it’s going to happen. Something gotta pop.”

Notably, LSU won the turnover margin 3-0 resulting in domination of the time of possession battle. LSU held the ball for just under 39 minutes. LSU outgained Arkansas 384-277.

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier responded to the worst game of his career last week against Ole Miss - albeit one that delivered some late-game heroics - with a serviceable performance.

No touchdowns or interceptions, but the Junior quarterback completed 22 of his 33 passes for 224 yards. His favorite target was receiver CJ Daniels with seven grabs for 86 yards.
