LSU thrashes Oklahoma 37-17
In what will go down as one of the tougher performances we’ve seen from an LSU quarterback, Garrett Nussmeier capped off the regular season in impressive fashion besting Oklahoma 37-17.
It was certainly a rocky start for LSU (8-4, 5-3) and Nussmeier.
On LSU’s third drive, Nussmeier was sacked and stripped for a fumble, which Oklahoma (6-6, 2-6) recovered for a touchdown tying the game at 7-7.
On LSU’s next drive, Nussmeier was sacked again and taken out of the game with an apparent shoulder injury.
While Nussmeier was out, Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold took advantage of the situation connecting with JJ Hester for a 50-yard gain, setting up a touchdown a few plays later.
LSU found itself down 14-10 with its starting quarterback out.
That’s exactly when Nussmeier trotted back out of the locker room and started warming up. And what a show he would put on.
Nussmeier, went on to complete 12 of his 16 passes after the injury for 190 with two touchdowns as LSU cruised on a 27-7 run to end the game.
After the win, LSU coach Brian Kelly was exuding confidence.
“We are taking receipts, and we will see you at the national championship,” Kelly said. “This team is building. We are excited about them, and we are really proud of them.”
Both of his post-injury touchdowns were deep balls to LSU receiver Chris Hilton, who appeared to be 100% healthy for the first time since his Fall camp injury. Those two touchdown catches for 85 yards, made him LSU’s leading receiver.
Nussmeier finished the game going 22-31 for 277 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.
LSU’s leading rusher was freshman running back Caden Durham with 80 yards on 11 carries.
Defesively, LSU made one of its best stand of the year outgaining Oklahoma 395-277 and limiting the Sooners to just ten points on offense.
LSU’s leading tackler was once again linebacker Whit Weeks with 15 tackles, including a sack, a quarterback hurry and a forced fumble.
