Despite some sloppy, poorly-timed turnovers, LSU (5-1, 2-1)bested South Carolina 20-10 Saturday in Tiger Stadium.
On paper, it was one of LSU’s best nights in most categories except for one - turnovers.
LSU’s troubled offense actually had 420 yards, including 166 on the ground, and 22 first downs.
Most nights, that will get you more than 20 points.
However, after two interceptions and a fumble lost at the goal line, points were tough to come by.
All three turnovers came amidst productive drives. All three drives were six or more plays and 32 or more yards, with two coming within ten yards of the end zone.
Despite LSU’s disappointment with so many turnovers, there was plenty of improvement to be found from LSU’s offense.
LSU tight end Trey’Dez Green had his best night of the season for LSU with 119 yards and a touchdown on his eight catches. Outside of two ugly interceptions, LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier also had an improved night, completing 20 of his 33 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns.
LSU even ran the ball well with Caden Durham leading the way on his 15 carries for 70 yards.
“We ran the ball with more effectiveness and got the ball to Trey'Dez Green which was important,” LSU coach Brian Kelly said. “However, we can't get down on the one-yard line and come up with three points.”
Defensively, LSU suffocated South Carolina (3-3, 1-3), limiting the Gamecocks to just 317 yards in another banner night for Blake Baker’s unit.
LSU held South Carolina star quarterback LaNoris Sellers to just 15-27 passing for 127 yards, no touchdowns and an interception. On. 22 attempts, Selllers had 19 yards running.
LSU safety AJ Haulcy led the way for the defense with 11 tackles.
