LSU has continued its recruiting surge as Lane Kiffin and the Tigers have flipped three-star wide receiver Gary Burney Jr. from Houston.
The 6-foot-3, 185-pound receiver picked up his official LSU offer on May 30 — the same day he announced a commitment to Houston — after spending about a month in steady contact with wide receivers coach George McDonald.
“My first reaction to getting the LSU offer was a lot of excitement, knowing that was the team I grew up on,” Burney told TigerBait earlier in June. “Prior to getting the offer, I was talking to LSU for about a month or so.”
LSU ramped things up in June, bringing Burney in for his final official visit of the summer this past weekend. He went public with his pledge to the Tigers on Sunday, shortly after leaving campus.
Burney’s recruitment was relatively quiet early, but his junior breakout season changed everything. He finished with 76 catches for 1,367 yards and 15 touchdowns, averaging 17.9 yards per reception, and his stock has surged in recent months.
He said he believes his athleticism, size and speed will fit well in Kiffin’s offense.
“What I like most about Lane Kiffin’s offense is that I know receivers in his system can all eat and put up 1,000-plus yards,” Burney said.
Burney is the 14th commitment in LSU’s 2027 recruiting class and the fifth wide receiver to pledge to the Tigers.
