Intel: LSU trending for top 2028 QBs as Peyton Houston's stock surges
Lost in the flurry of the ten commitments LSU has secured for the class of 2027 in the last 30 days has been LSU’s Herculean efforts to secure top QB prospects.
LSU offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. and quarterbacks coach Dane Stevens have hit the ground running to build a strong quarterback pipeline to LSU.
That, of course, started with securing the quarterback that was already committed when they got off the plane, Peyton Houston.
LSU has pushed hard this Summer to retain his commitment. After a coaching change, it was never a given that he would stay committed.
A major factor in LSU’s ability to retain Houston’s commitment through the coaching change was this staff investing early in him while at Ole Miss. In fact, Ole Miss was the first SEC school to extend an offer to him before he even started his freshman year in high school.
Thanks to LSU’s relentless efforts of Kiffin, Weis, Stevens and many others on staff, the Tigers appear to be in great shape.
He told TigerBait in an exclusive interview that he won’t be taking any visits to any other schools and it’s LSU or nowhere for him.
Of course, his stock continues to surge as he continues to shine at Summer camps.
Not only did he dominate LSU’s Summer 7v7 camp, leading Evangel to win every game, but he continues to shine at the national stage as well.
At the Elite 11 camp last month, he was named the most accurate quarterback at the camp by Rivals.
Currently, he’s at Nike’s The Opening Camp in Beaverton, Oregon, where he won the long throw competition with a 67-yard toss.
So, that’s the most accurate arm and the strongest arm at a camp containing the best quarterbacks in the country.
He has a very realistic shot to be named the Elite 11 MVP at this camp later today.
In talking with multiple sources with experience in quarterback evaluation, it is believed that his height is the only thing holding him back from being a five-star prospect - if not the top-rated quarterback in the class of 2027.
Even at 5’11, we expect him to rise in the industry ratings as they begin to update after this impressive summer circuit.
But LSU’s quarterback recruiting hasn’t stopped with Houston in 2027.
Since April, LSU has hosted six of the top-18 quarterbacks for the class of 2028.
This list includes:
Donald Tabron II out of Detroit, Michigan
Kaden Craft out of Mooreville, North Carolina
Kingston Preyear out of Alexander City, Alabama
Lukas Prock out of Wellesley, Massachusetts
Trace Hawkins out of Calhoun, Georgia
Chandler Dyson out of Warner Robins, Georgia
Sources familiar tell TigerBait, LSU’s top targets among that group are Donald Tabron II and Trace Hawkins. All indicators are that the Tigers are in great shape for both following strong visits in June.
TigerBait caught up with Trace Hawkins for comments on the job LSU has done in recruiting. He responded with high praise for the jobs both Weis and Stevens have done during his process.
“We talk pretty often,” Hawkins said of LSU’s coaching staff. “They are great coaches, and are coordinating a really great team. Big things will happen for them this fall. Great coaching staff all around, and even better men.”
Donald Tabron II raved about the possibility of playing in Lane Kiffin’s offense.
“Coach Kiffin has a great reputation in college football for developing a lot of talented quarterbacks, and you can see how creative he is offensively,” he told TigerBait in a June 18 interview. “Any quarterback would be interested in learning from someone with that track record.”
“I like how the offense allows its quarterbacks to make plays and push the ball down the field,” Tabron said. “They do a great job of creating opportunities for the quarterbacks. It’s an offense that can help a quarterback grow and succeed at the next level.”
Another prospect who has LSU high on his list is Virginia quarterback Anthony Turner, who tells TigerBait he plans to visit Baton Rouge after receiving an offer on June 6.
“I had a great conversation with Coach (Dane) Stevens about the scheme and his development of Jaxson Dart,” said Turner. “I'm looking forward to hopefully visiting in the next few weeks and getting to know some of the other coaches.”
Chandler Dyson also had high praise for LSU’s coaching staff.
Here’s an insert from his recent interview with TigerBait following the offer:
LSU extended its offer on June 9, and Dyson worked at camp under quarterbacks coach Dane Stevens.
“When I got it, I was very excited, very enthusiastic,” Dyson said. “I talked to Coach Dane — he’s the one that gave me the offer. And when I came to camp, he was fired up and ready to go. I really enjoyed it.”
Dyson said Stevens’ teaching style stood out throughout the camp.
“Today, I really liked how he was explaining things to us. I liked his pace during the drills,” Dyson said. “He really gives off that good coach vibe, but he wants to be like a big brother to us. So I really enjoyed that.”
I wouldn’t quite expect any of these 2028 quarterbacks to pull the trigger and commit quite yet. But, there has been substantial ground gained for LSU with many of the top prospects in the country for 2028 as LSU becomes a hotspot destination for top quarterbacks under Lane Kiffin.
