Guy: Predicting the most unpredictable season

With confetti still covering my backpack in my New Orleans hotel early into the morning of January 14, I made a harsh realization: the wildest ride in the history of college football was over.

Gone are the likes of now LSU legends like Joe Burrow and Joe Brady along 18 out of the 22 starters from the National Championship Game.

While Orgeron certainly gets all of the credit for building what might be the greatest collection of coaching and playing talent ever assembled, he is now tasked with repositioning his program to compete for more titles.

To be honest wins and losses are hardly what we should be judging him on this season. It's all about the moves he makes to put his program back in a position to compete for another championship in the near future.

In between being the poster boy of the anti-COVID fight, Orgeron quietly put together an impressive offseason.

This offseason he made all the moves to put his team back in a position to compete for a championship. He hired a championship winning defensive coordinator, Bo Pelini and brought in savvy offensive veteran in Scott Linehan as passing game coordinator.

In addition to another top-5 recruiting class, It seems Orgeron yet again struck gold again in the transfer portal with linebacker Jabril Cox and Center Liam Shanahan. Both are poised to take prominent starting roles this year.

Ultimately, there is a lot of unknowns around this team. The biggest question we all have is “How good is Myles Brennan?”. For a while, many betting outlets had him tied for the third-favorite to win the Heisman Trophy.

I don’t know if he’s that good, but he should be the best quarterback taking over as a new starter at LSU in quite a while. That includes Burrow, who struggled to complete 50 percent of his passes until the back half of the 2019 season.

He’s got the size, arm strength and supporting cast to be a great quarterback. But, has he overcome the pocket jitters that troubled him in spots as a young player? I would guess he has. But unfortunately with no spring and limited access to practice, my guess is just that - a guess.

The fact of the matter is we know less about this 2020 LSU team than we have known about any team in quite a while. However, LSU caught one major break this year: the schedule.

After what seems like decades of catching the short-end of the stick in SEC scheduling, LSU could not have asked for a more favorable schedule. The Tigers drew Vanderbilt and Missouri as their supplemental opponents from the East, and all four of their challenging games are spread out (Florida Oct. 17; Auburn Oct. 31; Alabama Nov. 14 and Texas A&M Nov. 28).

For that reason, I’m going with an impressive 8-2 season. I think Alabama’s returning experience would be a bit much to expect a win against, and I think the Tigers go 2-1 against Florida, Auburn and Texas A&M.
