The LSU class of 2019 is getting close to full as Monday morning Ruston tight end Ray Parker‍  gave LSU head coach Ed Orgeron his verbal commitment.

The 6-foot-5, 280-pound Parker gives LSU 20 commitments for the class of 2019.  Many have believed he could be a future offensive linemen but he's being recruited as a tight end by LSU.

With Parker's commitment, he's gives LSU two tight ends in the class with the other being junior college prospect TK McClendon‍ of Copiah-Lincoln.

Parker's unofficial visit to LSU for the Ole Miss game sealed the deal for the North Louisiana prospect.

"He took the trip down there this weekend and it made his mind up," Ruston head football coach Jerrod Baugh said. "He and his mom went down and he had been leaning that way anyway so I think that it just reassured him when he went down there to the ball game."

Baugh was asked for an accurate weight on Parker and he answered with a chuckle.

"Good luck with that it fluctuates with him.  Probably right now he's between 270 and 275."

Baugh has an opinion as to the debate on whether Parker is a tight end or offensive tackle at the next level.

"He's very athletic and catches the ball really well.  If you watch him drill-work his feet are really good," Baugh said. "I think at the next level he will be more beneficial still as a tight end.

"I think maybe at one point he was at 290 while he was here but he doesn't look like he weighs that much becuase he holds the weight really well and it doesn't seem to effect his athletic ability.  I'm not certain he'll end up playing tackle."

That big body of Parker's is certainly a total mismatch for high school opponents.

"For us at the high school level for sure with the matchups we get with him versus high school secondary guys it's way more beneificial for us to play him at tight end," Baugh added.

Baugh said that Parker let him know yesterday what he was planning to do with his commitment on Sunday and then finalized everything with Coach Ed Orgeron and Steve Ensminger at LSU.

Parker's acadmic situation has steadily gotten better in the last year.

"We made a lot of progress over the summer and still have a little work to do but it's a postivve step in the direction he needs to go," Baugh said. "We are still working on some things but right now as it stands he's in pretty good shape."
