LSU wins shoot out over Florida 49-42
We got Déjà vu on the Bayou.
Last year, LSU came into the Florida game as double-digit underdogs after consecutive SEC losses and a plethora of players unavailable for the game.
Sound familiar? The Tigers found themselves in the exact same scenario today against the Gators.
And in both games, The Tigers found a way to win the game in dramatic fashion.
Today, LSU (4-3) defeated Florida 49-42. This was the highest-scoring affair in the 68-game series between LSU and Florida.
“I love our team, I love LSU, and we went to work this week," LSU coach Ed Orgeron said. “I know I’m not going to blink. I’m not going to blink until the day I die, and this team isn’t going to blink.”
LSU came out the gates with a hot start in this one. After a pair of interceptions on Florida quarterback Emory Jones, the Tigers jumped out to 21-6 lead in the second quarter.
LSU had three long gains of 25 or more yards negated by penalties, which many fans considered questionable, including a would-be touchdown to LSU receiver Brian Thomas.
This prevented LSU from taking a 28-6 lead, giving Florida the opportunity to stay in the game, which it did not squander.
On the last play before halftime, Jones completed a Hail Mary pass to receiver Jace Christman.
Emory Jones followed that up with another touchdown on his first play of the second half too - however this time it was the variety of touchdown that gives points to the other team.
LSU defensive back Dwight McGolthern intercepted Jones returning it 37 yards for a touchdown extending LSU’s lead to 28-13.
At that point, Florida (4-3) turned to back up quarterback Anthony Richardson and the shoot-out was on.
Richardson went 10-19 for 167 yards with three touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.
Despite LSU’s anemic rushing attack coming into this game, the Tigers leaned heavily on running back Tyrion Davis-Price. And he rewarded the Tigers greatly for it.
Davis-Price set the school record for single-game rushing yards with 287 yards on 36 carries with three touchdowns.
"I told him (LSU offensive coordinator Jake Peetz) to feed me," Davis-Price said. "And he did and the O-line blocked and we came away with the W."
After a back and forth shoot out, Max Johnson claimed the lead on a 4th and 1 touchdown pass to Jerray Jenkins. Johnson went 14-24 for 133 yards, three touchdowns with no turnovers.
LSU Linebacker Damone Clark sealed the deal with an interception with less than two minutes to play. LSU had 21 points off of turnovers in the game.
Despite winning, LSU was actually outgained by Florida 488-454.
