For the 11th time since LSU began its football renaissance in 2000, a top-five team will be visiting Tiger Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Second-ranked Georgia (6-0) will take on LSU for the first time in five seasons. The Tigers lost to the Bulldogs 44-41 in Athens in 2013. Georgia’s last appearance in Baton Rouge occurred ten years ago. LSU was beaten by the Bulldogs 52-38 back in 2008.
The Tigers have a 4-6 record against top-five teams in Baton Rouge in the past 18-plus season. All six defeats came at the hands of coaches who won national championships – four losses to Alabama’s Nick Saban, one loss to Florida’s Urban Meyer one loss to Florida’s Steve Spurrier.
Here is a breakdown of those previous ten games.
October 6, 2001 – No. 2 Florida 44, No. 18 LSU 15
Gators quarterback Rex Grossman completed 22 of 32 passes for 464 yards and five touchdowns. Reche Caldwell caught six passes for 120 yards and one touchdown. Jabar Gaffney made five receptions for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Aaron Walker had five catches for 88 yards and one touchdown. The 29-point loss was the second worst for Saban when he was the LSU coach.
November 8, 2008 – No. 1 Alabama 27, No. 15 LSU 21
John Parker Wilson’s 1-yard run gave the Crimson Tide the overtime victory. The Tigers forced overtime on a 1-yard touchdown run by Charles Scott, who rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Wilson passed for 215 yards with Julio Jones gaining 128 yards on seven receptions. Glen Coffee rushed for 126 yards and one touchdown. Jarrett Lee had a difficult afternoon as he completed just 13 of 34 passes for 181 yards and one touchdown. Lee was intercepted four times.
October 10, 2009 – No. 1 Florida 13, No. 4 LSU 3
The Tigers had little success on offense as they were limited to 162 yards. Jordan Jefferson was 11-of-19 for only 96 yards with one interception. Tim Tebow completed 11 of 16 passes for 134 yards and one touchdown. Aaron Hernandez was on the receiving end of six of Tebow’s 11 completions.
November 6, 2010 – No. 12 LSU 24, No. 5 Alabama 21
A 75-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Jefferson to Rueben Randle sparked the Tigers’ victory over the Crimson Tide. Jefferson completed 10 of 13 passes for 141 yards and the one touchdown to Randle. A 47-yard completion from Lee to Randle clinched the victory for LSU. Stevan Ridley rushed for 88 yards and one touchdown and Josh Jasper kicked three field goals.
November 25, 2011 – No. 1 LSU 41, No. 3 Arkansas 17
The Tigers scored 17 fourth-quarter points to pull away for the victory which wrapped up a perfect regular season. LSU gained 494 yards with Kenny Hilliard rushing for 102 yards and one touchdown and Jefferson passing for 208 yards and one touchdown. Randle caught nine passes for 134 yards. Tyrann Mathieu had a 92-yard punt return for a touchdown.
October 13, 2012 – No. 9 LSU 23, No. 3 South Carolina 21
Trailing 14-10 after three quarters, the Tigers scored 13 consecutive points to make it a two-possession game. Jeremy Hill had a 50-yard touchdown run and Drew Alleman kicked two field goals in the final period. Hill ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns. Zach Mettenberger was 12-of-25 for 148 yards. Spurrier was the Gamecocks coach in this game.
November 3, 2012 – No. 1 Alabama 21, No. 5 LSU 17
This game was the most crushing loss for Les Miles during his time as Tigers coach. LSU allowed the Crimson Tide to score the winning points on a 28-yard touchdown pass from AJ McCarron to TJ Yeldon with 51 seconds remaining in the game. In a losing effort, Mettenberger completed 24 of 35 passes for 298 yards and one touchdown. Jarvis Landry made eight catches for 76 yards and the one touchdown. Hill rushed for 107 yards and one touchdown.
October 25, 2014 – No. 24 LSU 10, No. 3 Ole Miss 7
A 3-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Jennings to Logan Stokes (pictured above) in the fourth quarter gave the Tigers the come-from-behind victory. The scoring pass from Jennings to Jeter capped a 95-yard drive. Jennings completed eight of 16 passes for 142 yards, while Leonard Fournette rushed for 113 yards.
Nov. 8, 2014 – No. 4 Alabama 20, No. 14 LSU 13
The Tigers had another chance to pull off a victory against the Crimson Tide. A 39-yard field goal by Colby Delahoussaye with 50 seconds to play put LSU on top 13-10. However, Alabama responded with a game-tying field goal drive. Adam Griffith made a 27-yard field goal with three seconds left in the game. The Tide scored the winning touchdown in overtime on a 6-yard pass from Blake Sims to DeAndrew White. Sims passed for 209 yards and two touchdowns with Amari Cooper making eight catches for 83 yards and one touchdown.
Nov. 5, 2016 – No. 1 Alabama 10, No. 15 LSU 0
The Crimson Tide broke a scoreless tie with ten points in the fourth quarter. Jalen Hurts’ touchdown run gave Alabama the lead. Hurts accounted for 221 yards – 114 yards rushing and 107 yards passing. The Tigers gained only 125 yards – 33 on the ground and 92 through the air.
