Dying breed: program player

Instant gratification has taken over college athletics.

Most players now fall into two categories – those who spend as little time as possible in college and move on to professional sports or those who transfer to another school if not satisfied with time on the field/court.

What rarely exists now is the program player – that individual, who bides his time before jumping into the starting lineup. This player spends one season learning the ropes before becoming a backup.
