In his first season as Arizona head baseball coach, Jay Johnson had the Wildcats one victory away from the 2016 national championship.

However, Arizona lost two tight games to Coastal Carolina and finished as the national runner-up. Johnson would not take the Wildcats back to the College World Series for another five years. That Arizona squad lost two straight games.

Following that CWS trip, Johnson was hired by Director of Athletics Scott Woodward to be LSU’s baseball coach.
