LSU (1-1) bounced back from its opening loss to the tune of a 72-10 beat down of Grambling (0-2) in its home opener.

At first, the defense looked shaky giving up 227 yards on Grambling’s first three drives. But the offense never missed a beat scoring touchdowns on its first ten drives with 622 yards in the game.

LSU’s defense did eventually settle down getting into a groove limiting Grambling to just 93 yards and no points after the first three drives for a total of 320 yards.

“We played the game the right way,” LSU coach Brian Kelly said. “We certainly started fast, built great momentum, and asserted our will in the third quarter. Pleased with the way we played the game.”

Offensively, LSU quarterback Jayden became just the second player in LSU history to throw for five touchdowns in a half. The other to do so was none other than Joe Burrow who did it twice in 2019.

Daniels went 18-24 for five touchdowns with no turnovers adding 29 yards on five carries rushing.

His favorite target was once again receiver Brian Thomas who caught six passes for 78 yards and a pair of scores.

In a rare occurrence over the past two seasons, Daniels was not the leading rusher for the Tigers. That honor went to Notre Dame transfer running back Logan Diggs in his first game playing for the Tigers. He had 115 yards on 15 carries with one touchdown.

“We knew what we were getting with Logan (Diggs),” Kelly said. “It was just a matter of getting him healthy. He was ready to play. I think we saw the kind of back that is ready to help us."

After halftime with a 42-10 lead, LSU handed the keys to the offense to backup quarterback Garrett Nussmeir - and he did not take his foot off the accelerator.

Nussmeier completed four of his six passes for 48 yards. Notably, the two incompletions were dropped by freshman receiver Shelton Sampson seeing his first action as a Tiger - and both would have been good for touchdowns.

Defensively, cornerback Zy Alexander and linebacker West Weeks led the way with six tackles.

The Tigers made a few adjustments to the starting lineup this week after giving up 45 points to Florida State last week.

Defensive tackle Maason Smith returned from his one-game suspension, linebacker Harold Perkins slid over to the Jack position and Denver Harris starter at cornerback. All three had quiet nights with Smith and Perkins recording one tackle each. Harris had just one pass breakup and no tackles.
