LSU blasts Mississippi State 41-14
LSU (2-1, 1-0)opened up SEC play in style dismantling Mississippi State (2-1, 0-1) in Starkville 41-14.
LSU shrugged off its history of sluggish starts in early kickoff games and jumped all over Mississippi State right from the opening kickoff.
“Our team was, from my perspective, prepared and excited about playing on the road.” LSU coach Brian Kelly said. “I love the way they thought about this trip.
Led by quarterback Jayden Daniels with a near-perfect game, LSU jumped out to a 24-0 lead in a stretch where it outgained the Bulldogs 294-7. During that stretch, LSU limited Mississippi State to less than half a yard per play.
Jayden Daniels had his best game of the season stretching the field and completing 30 of his 34 passes for 361 yards and a pair of touchdowns to receiver Malik Nabers. Daniels added 64 yards and another pair of touchdowns on the ground for his second 400-yard game of the season.
Nabers had his best game as a Tiger with 13 grabs for 239 yards and the aforementioned pair of scores.
“Daniels and Nabers were hooking up to the level we all wanted to see,” Kelly said.
LSU showed no signs of slowing down after the hot start and cruised to the 41-14 victory outgaining Mississippi State outgaining the Bulldogs 530-201.
Daniels was LSU’s leading rusher followed by running back Logan Diggs with nine carries for 41 yards and freshman running back Kaleb Jackson with five carries for 19 yards including an impressive physical run for a first down.
Defensively, LSU was down a pair of starters with linebacker Omar Speights and safety Greg Brooks both out for the game.
But LSU didn’t miss a beat limiting Mississippi State to seven yards on its first five drives and just one score before pulling out the starters.
Filling in for Speights was freshman linebacker Whit Weeks who played very well leading LSU in tackles with eight tackles and a quarterback hurry.
Meanwhile, safety Andre Sam filled in for Brooks and was tied with linebacker Harold Perkins for second in tackles with four.
Perkins had a nice game with a sack and a pass breakup to accompany the four tackles.
