It was a barnburner in Oxford. After 104 points and 1,343 total yards of offense, it came down to one play.

LSU (3-2, 1-1) had the ball 26 yards away from a touchdown down six points. After escaping the Ole Miss defender LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels launched a prayer to the end zone. But that prayer fell right throw the extended hand of receiver Chris Hilton who could not secure the ball with defenders all around him.

This secured the 55-49 victory for Ole Miss (4-1, 1-1).

LSU allowed the most yards in recent history giving up 706  yards to Ole Miss.

“We need to be pissed off about what happened and have some resolve about our circumstance,” LSU coach Brian Kelly said. “That’s not a standard of play that’s acceptable. I expect them to respond the right way. They’ve got a lot of pride."

LSU’s defense managed to prevent Ole Miss from scoring on three of its 12 drives including the final eight-play, 88-yard drive where Ole Miss took the lead with 39 seconds to play.

LSU safeties Andre Sam and Major Burns led the team in tackles with 14 and 11 respectively.

Despite the loss, Daniels played what might be the best game of his career putting up more than 500 yards and five touchdowns. He completed 27 of 36 passes for 414 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. He ran the ball 15 times for 99 yards and another touchdown.

He led LSU’s offense to 637 yards and 49 points with an impressive 8.5 yards per play.

His favorite target was receiver Brain Thomas who made eight catches for 124 yards and three touchdowns. Right behind him was receiver Malik Nabers with eight grabs for 102 yards.

LSU running back Logan Diggs led the team in rushing with 101 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
