LSU escapes Missouri with a win 49-39
LSU’s offense shined once again against Missouri (5-1, 1-1), but ultimately it was the Tigers’ maligned defense that secured the win late for LSU 49-39.
LSU’s defense gave up touchdowns on each of its first three drives taking a 22-7 lead.
And, on a day when the defense gave up 527 yards, Missouri found itself with the ball on its own five-yard line with 45 seconds to play down 42-39.
Two plays later, LSU (4-2, 3-1) safety Major Burns put the game away with a 17-yard interception returned for a touchdown.
After the first three drives, LSU held Missouri to just 17 points on its final ten drives to end the game on a 42-17 run.
LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels once again put on a show completing 15 of 21 passes for 259 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions including the 29-yard strike to receiver Malik Nabers to take the lead with just 2:58 to play. He added 130 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown on the ground.
On top of the final go-ahead score, Nabers was the leading receiver with grabs for 146 yards and the aforementioned touchdown.
Daniels has put together an impressive season. After six games, he has 2,327 total yards, with 23 total touchdowns against just two interceptions for the year.
“Jayden Daniels is just a warrior,” LSU coach Brain Kelly said. “He's tough. He’s physical. He’s smart. He’s skilled. There’s just not enough individual superlatives I can say about him.”
After giving up 706 yards to Ole Miss last week, LSU put a heavier emphasis on running the ball in an effort to eat the clock and keep the defense off the field. The Tigers ran the ball 43 times and threw it just 23 times.
LSU running back Logan Diggs bested Daniels for the leading rusher with 134 yards on 24 carries with a touchdown.
LSU outgained Missouri 533-527.
While, it was far from a defensive shutout, LSU’s defense did just enough to secure victory.
“We didn’t bring a lot of pressure because I didn’t want to get in to a lot of matchup situations,” Kelly said. “I didn’t want to get in to cover one situation where we gave three one-on-one matchups.”
Defensively, LSU cornerback Zy Alexander led the team with seven tackles. LSU linebacker Harold Perkins and Burns both grabbed interceptions.
