LSU drops shoot out with Alabama 42-28
It was a great game for about three quarters, with LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels and Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe exchanging blows.
But, after a few critical errors and Daniels getting knocked out of the game on a roughing the passer call, LSU (6-3, 4-2) simply ran out of gas in the final stretch giving Alabama (8-1, 6-0) the win 42-28.
"We played on the road at top-10 team tonight,” LSU coach Brian Kelly said. “You can't play good. We played good tonight. Good's not good enough."
LSU actually held the lead 28-21 in the third quarter, at which point the Tigers had scored touchdowns on four of its six drives. Penalties and a tipped pass being intercepted stalled LSU’s next two drives.
Meanwhile, LSU’s defensive woes continued allowing 21 unanswered points grabbing a 42-28 lead two minutes into the fourth quarter.
“The players did a great job in the second half,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said. “They got a couple of big stops on defense when we needed them to go up two scores. That kind of changed the game for us. Man, I’m proud of the way our guys competed.”
On the first play of the next drive, Alabama linebacker Dallas Turner had a big hit on Daniels and was penalized for roughing the passer - though many felt it should have been targeting.
Daniels entered concussion protocol and did not return to the game.
Before leaving the game, Daniels put on a show.
He completed 15 of 24 passes for 219 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception. On the ground, he added 163 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries for 382 total yards.
His connection with LSU’s leading receiver Malik Nabers remained strong in this one as Nabers finished with ten grabs for 171 yards and a touchdown.
LSU’s backup quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was then forced into action completing five of ten passes for 53 yards.
Defensively, LSU simply couldn’t get a stop when it needed it. Milroe ran 20 times for 155 yards and four touchdowns. In the air he went 15-23 for 219 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.
The Crimson Tide outgained LSU 507-478 and went 11-14 on third down.
In LSU’s three losses this year, the Tigers allowed 45, 55 and 42 points.
LSU linebacker Greg Penn was LSU’s leading tackler with ten tackles.
