LSU dismantles South Alabama 42-10

After a litany of slow starts this year, LSU (4-1, 1-0)  was looking to right the ship and get off to a fast start against South Alabama (2-3, 1-0).

Brian Kelly looked no further than LSU’s track star freshman running back, Caden Durham, for that fast start.

LSU turned to Durham on the game's first two plays, and he took it 71 and 86 yards respectively setting up a 14-0 lead. 

The Tigers never looked back cruising to a 42-10 victory Saturday night in Tiger Stadium.

“Bottom line is we’ve gotten better over the past five weeks,” Kelly said. “That’s exactly what we needed going into the off week.”

After racking up 157 yards on his first two touches, Durham finished with seven carries for 128 yards and a touchdown with three catches for 89 yards and another touchdown.

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier passed for a career-high 409 yards completing 26 of his 39 passes with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He added a pair of touchdowns on the ground giving him four total touchdowns.

This performance puts Nussmeier among the nation’s leading passers this season with 1,656 yards and 15 touchdowns.

His leading receiver for the evening was Kyren Lacy hauling in five grabs for 107 yards.

LSU doubled South Alabama’s yardage output outgaining the Jaguars 667-333.

Defensively LSU’s linebackers were all over the field. Linebacker Greg Penn was LSU’s leading tackler with 14 tackles with fellow linebacker Whit Weeks just behind him with nine tackles.

Now, LSU goes into the bye week before a huge date against Ole Miss on October 12.
