Walk off touchdown! Tigers defeat Ole Miss in overtime 29-26
LSU (5-1, 2-0) defeated Ole Miss (4-2, 1-2) in a thrilling overtime upset Saturday night in Tiger Stadium 29-26.
It was an ugly game for LSU’s star quarterback Garrett Nussmeier completing less than half of his passes with multiple interceptions.
But when the game was on the line, he was the hero LSU needed. After leading LSU back down from multiple scores, LSU found itself down 23-16 with 2:47 left to play with the ball and a desperate need for a touchdown.
LSU’s offense had struggled all night - but that didn’t matter once the ball snapped.
Nussmeier led LSU on a 13-play 75-yard drive capped off by a 23-yard touchdown pass to receiver Aaron Anderson on 4th and 5 with 27 seconds left to play.
Ole Miss got the ball first in overtime, and LSU’s defense gave yet another valiant performance forcing the Rebels to go backward 15 yards on a three-and-out.
Ole Miss Kicker Caden Davis drilled a 57-yard field goal to take the lead in overtime.
One play later, the game was over.
Nussmeier heaved a 25-yard pass to receiver Kyren Lacy securing the upset victory over a top-10 team.
“It’s not a 50/50 ball. It’s a 100/0 ball,” Nussmeier said of the matchup.
Lacy was LSU’s leading with five grabs for 111 yards and the game-winning touchdown.
As previously mentioned it was a rough night for Nussmeier completing just 22 of his 51 throws for 337 yards with three touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.
“It would’ve been easier for us to be frustrated,” LSU coach Brian Kelly said of his quarterback’s performance. “But Garrett (Nussmeier) wasn’t frustrated. And what you saw at the end is why it was a great growth game. He made the plays at the end."
It didn’t help that LSU ran the ball 24 times for just 84 yards. LSU running back Caden Durham was the leading rusher with 12 carries for 37 yards.
Despite losing the game, Ole Miss outgained LSU 464-421.
LSU’s defense played much better than the 464 yards might suggest. It came up with multiple timely stops including two turnovers and six sacks.
LSU linebacker Whit Weeks played his best game to date recording 18 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, and a pass break up.
