LSU bounces back with win against Vanderbilt 24-17
LSU (7-4, 4-3) bounced back from a three-game skid beating Vanderbilt 24-17 Saturday in Tiger Stadium.
Between the losing streak and losing the top-rated recruit in the class of 2025, Bryce Underwood, this week, LSU desperately needed some positive momentum.
After the first couple of drives, it certainly didn’t appear LSU would get that.
LSU opened the game with a three-and-out drive and Vanderbilt (6-5, 3-4) responded with a 63-yard touchdown from quarterback Diego Pavia to receiver Quincy Skinner on the first play.
However, despite the early deficit, LSU coach Brian Kelly says he never lost confidence.
“I felt confident in our football team that they were prepared, and that they were going to win this football game,” Kelly said. “I felt that on the sideline. I just stayed positive with the group and kept plugging. We came back with a great drive to tie the thing up, and obviously. I thought we controlled the game from there on out."
LSU fell behind 7-0 and responded immediately with an eight-play 90-yard drive capped off by a 20-yard touchdown run from running back Josh Williams.
Williams was LSU’s leading rusher with 14 carries for 90 yards and two touchdowns.
After Williams’ pair of scores, LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier connected with receiver Kyren Lacy for a 12-yard touchdown pass with 3:32 remaining in the third quarter. This gave LSU a 21-10 lead, which proved too much for Vanderbilt to overcome as LSU coasted to a 24-17 win.
Vanderbilt had a difficult time moving the ball after its opening play. After that play, Vanderbilt accounted for just 245 total yards.
LSU outgained Vanderbilt 471-308.
LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier bounced back from a rough stretch of games completing 28 of his 37 passes for 332 yards a touchdown and no turnovers. His favorite target was Lacy with six grabs for 85 yards and the aforementioned touchdown.
LSU’s leading tackler was linebacker Whit Weeks with seven tackles.
