You could hear the groaning from LSU fans after the first drive.
After a sloppy three-and-out, it seemed Tiger Stadium was due for another slow night on offense with Blake Baker’s defense suffocating its way to victory. After all three games, LSU (4-0, 1-0) had yet to score more than 24 points.
Then LSU ripped off a 13-play 45-yard touchdown drive and never looked back.
LSU scored touchdowns on every drive for the rest of the game until its final drive, securing a 56-10 victory over Southeastern (2-2).
“We have a standard of the way we want to play,” LSU coach Brian Kelly said. “We definitely upheld that today. There’s no perfection out there, but there was definitely some progress.”
As dominant as the final score was, the box score may have been more lopsided. LSU outgained Southeastern 530-204. LSU had 30 first downs to Southeastern’s 11.
After going up 42-0 in the third quarter, LSU rested most of its starters on both sides of the ball.
LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier had his sharpest night of the season, completing 25 of his 31 passes for 273 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also ran the ball five times for 10 yards and a touchdown.
His favorite target was Bauer Sharp, who hauled in five grabs for 73 yards and a touchdown.
This actually allowed for LSU back up quarterback Michael Va Buren to come in and shine, going 10-12 for 122 yards and a touchdown of his own.
On the ground, LSU used a variety of backs, and we saw a new face lead the way in yards - Ju’Juan Johnson. Johnson had eight carries for 43 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Defensively, LSU only took the field for 47 plays, so not many defensive stats were recorded, but LSU safety Dashawn Spears was the leading tackler with four.
