LSU defeats Holy Cross 9-2

Antoine Duplantis, Daniel Cabrera and Brock Mathis each hit solo home runs as LSU defeated Holy Cross 9-2 in a non-conference game at The Box on Wednesday night.

                

HOW THEY SCORED

Holy Cross first inning – With one out, Ben Malgeri hit a solo home run over the leftfield fence, HOLY CROSS 1, LSU 0

LSU first inning – With two out, Duplantis hit a solo home run over the rightfield fence. HOLY CROSS 1, LSU 1

Holy Cross second inning – With one out, Alex Gionis walked and stole second. Kellen McCormick walked. After Alex Volpi struck out, Gionis scored when shortstop Hal Hughes made an error on Riley Livingston’s ground ball. HOLY CROSS 2, LSU 1

LSU third inning – Hughes walked and Mathis singled. Hughes advanced to third and Mathis moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Drew Bianco. Hughes scored on a sacrifice fly to the leftfielder by Zach Watson. HOLY CROSS 2, LSU 2

LSU fourth inning – Cabrera hit a leadoff home run over the rightfield fence. LSU 3, HOLY CROSS 2

LSU fifth inning – Hughes walked and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mathis. Bianco was hit by a pitch. Hughes was thrown out at the plate by centerfielder Austin Masel on Watson’s single. Duplantis walked to load the bases. Bianco and Watson scored on Cabrera’s single. Duplantis scored on Cade Beloso’s single. Chris Reid walked to load the bases. Cabrera scored on a passed ball by Livingston. LSU 7, HOLY CROSS 2

LSU sixth inning – With one out, Mathis hit a home run over the leftfield fence. LSU 8, HOLY CROSS 2

LSU seventh inning – Duplantis singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Luke Dawson. Duplantis moved to third on a fly out to the centerfielder by Cabrera and scored on a ground out to the second baseman by Beloso. LSU 9, HOLY CROSS 2

                         

LSU PLAYER OF THE GAME

Cabrera had two hits and drove in three runs. His leadoff homer in the fourth snapped a 2-2 tie. Then, Cabrera had a two-run single in the fifth to put the Tigers in front 5-2. Cabrera, who went 2-for-4, is now batting .325 for the season. Cabrera’s homer was his fourth of the season.
