More than 20 seasons ago, then-LSU coach Nick Saban indicated a defense can play at a championship level according to how well its secondary performs.

Specifically, Saban stressed that having good cover cornerbacks makes it easier for the rest of the defense. If a team has three good pass defenders in the secondary – two cornerbacks and a nickel back, the coordinator can be more creative with blitz packages.
