Beloso’s HR gives LSU doubleheader split with California

Cade Beloso hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to give LSU a 5-4 victory against California and a split of their doubleheader Saturday at The Box. The Bears defeated the Tigers 5-2 in the first game.

GAME 1

HOW THEY SCORED

LSU fifth inning – With two out, Brock Mathis hit a solo home run over the leftfield fence. LSU 1, CALIFORNIA 0

California sixth inning – Pinch-hitter Quentin Selma doubled. After Cameron Eden flied out to the leftfielder, Andrew Vaughn was intentionally walked. Selma scored on a single by Korey Lee. Max Flower singled to load the bases. Vaughn scored on a single by Darren Baker. Lee scored on a ground out to the pitcher by Sam Wezniak. Flower and Baker scored on a single by Brandon McIlwain. CALIFORNIA 5, LSU 1

LSU sixth inning – Josh Smith hit a leadoff home run over the rightfield fence. CALIFORNIA 5, LSU 2

                              

LSU PLAYER OF THE GAME

Making his first weekend start, Cole Henry gave the Tigers four scoreless innings. Henry allowed three batters to reach base – Wezniak on a hit by pitch in the second, Hance Smith on a single in the third and Lee on a single in the fourth. None of those three baserunners got past first base. Henry, who was taken out because his back tightened up, struck out one batter.

LSU’s starting batting order in the first game was Smith, SS; Zach Watson, CF, Antoine Duplantis, RF; Daniel Cabrera, LF; Cade Beloso, 1B; Chris Reid, 3B; Giovanni DiGiacomo, DH, Mathis, C; Hughes, 2B. . .Watson’s eight-game hitting streak ended in the first game when he went 0-for-3. . .Outside of the two solo homers, no Tigers player got past first base until the seventh when Reid walked and moved to third on two wild pitches. Representing the tying run, Smith flied out to the leftfielder to end the game. . .Ma’Khail Hilliard had a 1-2-3 fifth inning with two strikeouts. . .Todd Peterson gave up all five runs on five hits in the sixth. Peterson blew his second save in less than a week. He had a blown save last Sunday at Texas. . .Trent Vietmeier, who relieved Peterson, retired all four batters he faced. . .The paid attendance for the first game was 10,882. The actual crowd was about 5,600.

California third inning – With two out John Lagattuta walked and Eden singled. Lagattuta scored on a single by Vaughn. Eden advanced to third and Vaughn moved to second on the throw to the plate. Lee was intentionally walked to load the bases. Eden scored on a walk to Flower. Vaughn and Lee scored on a single by Baker. CALIFORNIA 4, LSU 1

LSU fourth inning – With two out, Beloso hit a solo home run over the rightfield fence. CALIFORNIA 4, LSU 2

LSU fifth inning – Smith was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Watson. CALIFORNIA 4, LSU 3

LSU sixth inning – Reid singled and Beloso hit a two-run homer over the rightfield fence. LSU 5, CALIFORNIA 4

                               

LSU PLAYER OF THE GAME

Beloso delivered his second game-winning home run of the season. He hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to beat Army 6-5. Beloso’s sixth-inning homer followed a single by Reid. Beloso hit a solo home run in the fourth. Beloso, who went 0-for-3 in the first game of the doubleheader, now has four home runs for the season.

He went 0-for-2 and was hit by pitches twice. . .Trailing 4-3, the Tigers had a chance to tie the score in the fifth. With Watson at second on no outs, Duplantis flied out and both Cabrera and Garza popped up. . .Walker retired the first eight batters, but he then allowed the next six hitters to reach base – three on walks and three on singles. Baker had a big two-out single. Walker was replaced by Fontenot after giving up singles by Wezniak and McIlwain to start the fourth. . .Fontenot stranded runners in scoring position in both the fourth and fifth innings. He had a 1-2-3 sixth inning. California put the tying run on base with one out in the seventh on a double by Lee. Fontenot retired Flower on a fly ball to deep centerfield and Baker on a line out to Reid at third base. UP NEXT

LSU will play Northwestern State at Brown-Stroud Field in Natchitoches on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Central. The Demons (7-5) defeated Abilene Christian 24-11 in the second game of their Southland Conference series in Abilene (Tex.) on Saturday afternoon. Landon Marceaux will be the starting pitcher for the Tigers. The LSU-Northwestern State game will be available on ESPN+.
