According to sources familiar with former LSU Heisman winner Jayden Daniels’ camp, contrary to previous reports, neither he nor anyone who represents him has requested LSU’s copy of the 2023 Heisman Trophy be returned.
This comes on the heels of ESPN publishing a cease-and-desist letter filed by Daniels’ legal representation requesting LSU stop using his name image and likeness. This all comes in the wake of LSU allowing sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett to wear the number 5 jersey this upcoming season, which had not been worn by an LSU football player since Jayden Daniels in 2023.
Pickett claims he was promised that number by LSU’s previous coaching staff, but was told he would not be allowed to wear it.
However, new LSU head coach Lane Kiffin appears to have reversed that decision and will honor the promise made to DJ Pickett.
However, sources close to the situation claim the cease-and-desist letter was in an attempt to be compensated for use of Daniels’ name, image and likeness and had nothing to do with the jersey being reused.
Jayden Daniels and his camp very much so intended for this matter to be resolved privately, according to the source.
Additionally, Daniels never requested LSU retire his jersey, but rather LSU promised to do so initially of its own volition, per sources. However, since then, LSU has attempted to offer the number to two separate players.
Sources noted that similar requests for the number 9 jersey, which has not been used since Joe Burrow wore it in 2019, winning the Heisman and National Title, have not been handled in the same manner.
However, sources add that Daniels remains close with Burrow and Pickett and is not upset with them at all. Daniels frustartion comes is strictly directed at LSU’s communication with all parties involved.
Daniels published the following statement on social media earlier:
“I have been locked in on training camp and that’s been my number one focus. I have a lot of gratitude for my time at LSU and I’m proud of what my teammates and I accomplished there. Obviously, there are issues to be worked out between my team and LSU and my hope is that it will get done privately. My sole personal focus is on Commanders’ football. I realize the business of football is unique and I trust this can all be resolved.”
