LSU will have a No. 7 on both sides of the football this fall.
Tight end Trey’Dez Green and linebacker Whit Weeks have been selected to wear LSU’s honored No. 7 jersey for the 2026 season, continuing one of the most recognizable traditions in college football. The two can share the number because Green plays offense and Weeks plays defense.
The No. 7 has become synonymous with LSU’s premier playmakers. The modern tradition dates to Patrick Peterson, who wore the number from 2008-10 before it passed to Tyrann Mathieu in 2011. Since then, the list has included Leonard Fournette, DJ Chark, Grant Delpit, Ja’Marr Chase, Derek Stingley Jr., Kayshon Boutte, Will Campbell and Harold Perkins Jr. LSU has described the No. 7 recipient as a dynamic playmaker who also possesses the qualities needed to help build championship teams.
Green certainly fits the playmaker description. The 6-foot-7 tight end enters his junior season with 46 career receptions for 534 yards and 11 touchdowns and was recently named first-team preseason All-SEC by the league's coaches. He is expected to be one of the featured weapons in Lane Kiffin and Charlie Weis Jr.'s offense.
Weeks will carry the number on defense as one of the Tigers' most established veterans. He earned consensus first-team All-SEC honors in 2024 after piling up 125 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception, and he enters 2026 as a preseason first-team All-SEC selection.
There is another historical wrinkle surrounding No. 7 this season. LSU announced in July that the jersey of former All-America quarterback Bert Jones will be retired when the Tigers host Texas on Nov. 14. Jones' No. 7 will join the retired jerseys of Billy Cannon, Tommy Casanova, Jerry Stovall and Charles Alexander, although LSU's policy allows current players to continue wearing all retired numbers except Cannon's No. 20.
Now Green and Weeks get their opportunity to add their names to a No. 7 legacy that has come to represent some of the most dynamic players to wear purple and gold.
