BREAKING: Starting LSU QB Sam Leavitt listed as “Doubtful”
LSU could be without starting quarterback Sam Leavitt for Saturday’s showdown at Ole Miss.
Leavitt was listed as doubtful Wednesday night on the SEC’s initial Student-Athlete Availability Report ahead of No. 7 LSU’s matchup with No. 8 Ole Miss.
The designation is significant for the Tigers as they prepare to open SEC play Saturday night in Oxford. Under the SEC’s availability reporting policy, “doubtful” indicates that a player is considered unlikely to participate.
The report does not provide a reason for Leavitt’s designation.
SEC schools are required to submit an initial availability report Wednesday evening ahead of Saturday conference games. Those reports are updated following practice Thursday and Friday before a final game-day report is released no later than 90 minutes before kickoff.
Leavitt has started each of LSU’s first two games after transferring from Arizona State during the offseason. He opened his LSU career with an impressive performance against Clemson, throwing for 230 yards while rushing for 113 yards and accounting for three touchdowns in the Tigers’ 51-10 victory.
He followed that by completing 25 of 38 passes for 344 yards in LSU’s 45-14 win over Louisiana Tech. Leavitt accounted for four touchdowns in the victory, although he also threw three interceptions in the first half.
If Leavitt is unable to play, LSU’s other scholarship quarterbacks listed on the roster include redshirt freshman Husan Longstreet and redshirt sophomore Landen Clark. LSU would likely turn to Clark who has already seen action this season, entering in relief of Leavitt in both games.
Leavitt was the only LSU player listed as doubtful on Wednesday’s initial report. Linebackers TJ Dottery and Tylen Singleton were listed as questionable, while Trey’Dez Green, Whit Weeks, Dayhon Keys and Aliou Bah were listed as probable.
Wide receiver Phillip Wright III, linebacker Jaiden Braker and running back Raycine Guillory Jr. were listed as out.
LSU and Ole Miss are scheduled to kick off at 6:30 p.m. CT Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, with the game televised on ABC.
