Corey Raymond returns to LSU
LSU coach Brian Kelly has hired long-time defensive back coach Corey Raymond back to coach defensive backs per multiple sources.
When Brian Kelly got hired after the 2021 season, the only coach he retained was offensive line coach Brad Davis.
Raymond is now the second staff member that wasn’t retained to be rehired this offseason.
Raymond served as LSU’s defensive back and cornerback coach from 2012-2021.
During that time he recruited and coached seven first-team All-Americans, including Eric Reid (2012), Jalen Mills (2015), Jamal Adams (2016), Tre’Davious White (2016), Greedy Williams (2018), Grant Delpit (2018 and 2019) and Derek Stingley Jr. (2019, 2020).
Delpit also won the Thorpe Award in 2019 for the nation’s top defensive back.
He also had 14 of his defensive backs get drafted during that time including three first-round draft picks and five second-round draft picks.
However, in 2020, LSU’s defense ranked last in the FBS in passing yards allowed giving up 323 yards per game. In 2021, the secondary improved by nearly 100 yards per game giving up 236 yards per content and ranking 80th in the country. However, that improvement was not enough and Kelly decided not to retain Raymond.
In Raymond’s two-year tenure at Florida during Billy Napier’s program rebuild, Florida’s passing defense ranked 87th and 70th in the country resulting in Florida dismissing Raymond.
Raymond is now tasked with fixing LSU’s secondary, which ranked 118th in the country this season giving up 255 yards per game.
